About This Site
This site is built with Hugo, a static web generator written in the Go language and hosted on AWS, served through Amazon CloudFront from Amazon S3. The theme is The Blues, my own theme, which started from the Clean White Hugo Theme by Huabing Zhao.
Privacy
This site has no accounts or sign-ups, and I don’t sell or share anything about visitors. Here is what it uses:
- Analytics. Pages use Google Analytics 4 to count visits: which pages are read, roughly where from (country and city, worked out from your IP address), the page that linked here, and your device and browser type. It sets two cookies on this site,
_gaand_ga_followed by an ID, which last up to two years (Google’s cookie list). If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, Google Analytics isn’t loaded at all: no request to Google and no cookies. See Google’s privacy policy. - Comments. Comments on posts come from Disqus and load only when you choose to show them. Disqus then sets its own cookies and may load its advertising partners; see Disqus’s privacy policy.
- Videos. YouTube videos are embedded from
youtube-nocookie.com, which sets no cookies until you play one. - Photos. Photos load from SmugMug (
photos.smugmug.com), so SmugMug receives the usual details of each request, such as your IP address and browser. - Apps. The apps run in your browser; SnugCut doesn’t upload the files you open. Its helper libraries load from the public jsDelivr and cdnjs networks. The apps page shows each app’s screenshot from its GitHub repository (
raw.githubusercontent.com), so GitHub receives the usual details of that request.
Accessibility
I want everyone to be able to read this site and use its apps. The target is WCAG 2.1 Level AA. The site hasn’t had a formal audit, so I don’t claim full conformance.
What the site does
- Text meets at least 4.5:1 contrast in both light and dark mode. You can follow your device’s setting or pick Light or Dark with the switch in the menu.
- You can read and navigate the site from the keyboard, with a visible focus outline. Pages reflow to a narrow screen (320 px) without sideways scrolling.
- Animations are turned off if your device asks for reduced motion. The theme switch and the apps support Windows contrast themes (forced colors).
- Comments load only when you choose to show them.
Known limitations
- The site hasn’t yet been tested with screen readers or on touch devices.
- Comments (Disqus), embedded videos (YouTube) and photos (SmugMug) come from other services, and I can’t control how accessible they are.
- SnugCut’s layout preview is a drawing. If something in it isn’t clear without seeing it, please tell me.
Tell me about a problem
If something on this site is hard to use, please open an issue on GitHub (you need a GitHub account). For SnugCut, use SnugCut’s issues. For anything else on the site, use the site theme’s issues. Please say which page and what happened. I’ll do my best to fix it.
